#ASKSETHANYTHING: Talk smack on realtors at your own peril [Column] (2024)

In the competitive world of real estate, agents often find themselves vying for clients and trying to stand out in a crowded market. While ambition and determination are crucial in this profession, there is a fine line between healthy competition and undermining others. Unfortunately, some Realtors resort to speaking negatively about their peers to gain a perceived advantage. I want to expand on why this is bad not only for the reputation of individual Realtors but for the entire industry as a whole.

Upholding Professionalism: As professionals, Realtors are expected to adhere to a code of ethics and maintain high standards of conduct. Speaking ill of other Realtors undermines the professionalism of the entire industry. Clients and the public, in general, hold Realtors in higher regard when they exhibit integrity and respect toward one another.

Building Trust: Trust is the foundation of any successful real estate transaction. When a Realtor badmouths their peers, they erode trust among consumers. People are less likely to trust an agent who engages in negative behavior, fearing that they might be subject to the same treatment in the future.

Focus on Self-Improvement: Rather than focusing on what others are doing wrong, I personally like to concentrate on self-improvement. Every agent has unique strengths and weaknesses, and rather than wasting time criticizing others, one can identify their areas for growth and work on becoming a better Realtor. There is so much to learn from our peers after all.

Collaboration Opportunities: In the real estate industry, collaboration between agents is common and can lead to mutually beneficial partnerships. When Realtors speak negatively about one another, they discourage collaboration and hinder potential opportunities for teamwork and shared success.

Reputation: In today’s digital age, a Realtor’s reputation can spread rapidly, thanks to online reviews and social media. Engaging in negative discussions about other Realtors can tarnish one’s reputation quickly, leading to the potential loss of clients and business opportunities. Also, there is a chance of being sued if an agent goes too far and the victim wants to claim damages.

Leading by Example: Realtors have the power to influence and shape the industry’s culture. By setting an example of professionalism and respect, they encourage other agents to follow suit, ultimately raising the overall standard of conduct within the profession. I was new at one point; I didn’t always have my stuff all the way together. There is a learning curve and it is helping no one for us to keep throwing grenades at each other. Be professional, be kind, mind your own, and focus on yourself and your own business. It’s that simple.
