Sad to say, international law pretty much says that this won't work except in some scenarios. There is no law that says an individual or a business CANNOT sell land on Mars, but there are laws that say no country can do so.

What happens if i want to buy a land on Mars

  1. For an acre of land on Mars, you pay money to a company.
  2. They send you a title document that they printed and signed... and a map. pointing out "your" land.
  3. Then, let's say that an explorer lands right in the middle of "your" acre on Mars and starts building a colony there.
  4. You send them a copy of your deed and tell them they have to pay you a million dollars a year in rent or move their colony somewhere else.
  5. If They pay you no attention at all.
  6. You should go to court with them. if courts say, "Sorry, we don't have any power over Mars. Have a nice day."

So what do you do next? No country on earth will give you title documents that you COULD defend you in court, because they signed international laws saying they wouldn't do that... Which literally mean that you're pretty much out of luck. Your title document has no value at all.

Several companies have also been selling land on the Moon, and it has been shown that they all sell the same pieces of land to different people. So now more than one person has worthless pieces of paper that describe the SAME pieces of land.

So, if ANYONE tries to sell you land on Mars, you know for sure that they are trying to trick you. People who sell the rights to name stars or asteroids do the same thing...

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) is the only group that can name celestial bodies. They only give naming rights to the person who found the object, and they don't like it when that person sells naming rights to someone else. When you think about who owns what in deep space, think about the oceans here on Earth that are not in "national waters."

The ocean and the sea floor below it follow almost the same rules as land on our planet.

There, anyone can go. Anyone can fish, drill for oil, mine the sea bed, and do other things to use the resources there. No one can legally "claim" it or buy or sell it.

The laws in that place are the same as the laws of the boat that took you there. This means that the laws depend on where the boat is registered or where it last left port.

Same exact deal in space.
