The Bottom Line Don't let "social shyness" keep you away from a real estate career. The more you talk to clients, the more you will find your shyness diminish. Did you know? You don't need to be extroverted to have a successful career as a real estate agent. You may believe that, to become a successful real estate agent, you need to be an “extrovert” – the life of the party, willing to talk to anyone, at any time, about anything. This isn’t true. Most people, including real estate agents, consider themselves somewhat shy in social situations. Many Real Living Sales Professionals will tell you that a big, outgoing personality is not a prerequisite for a rewarding and enjoyable career in real estate. While many real estate agents are certainly outgoing and gregarious – including some of our own Real Living Sales Professionals – not all of them are naturally extroverted. The important thing to remember is that any worries you may have over “social shyness” don’t really apply to your real estate career. Knowledge of real estate and your local market, combined with a true desire to help people buy and sell homes, will give you the confidence to talk with, work with and establish long-term relationships with people you might otherwise be hesitant to talk to. You may have to stretch your comfort zone at first, but it becomes easier and more natural every time you talk with a potential buyer or seller. The more you know, the more you work – and the more customers you assist, in turn diminishing any sense of shyness you may have on the job. As your professional capabilities and reputation grow, you may find yourself becoming less shy in your personal life, and building an even wider circle of friends. For more information on starting your real estate agent career with Real Living, please contact one of our local offices.
