Before downloading new software, it's a good idea to back up your device to make sure that you have a copy of your important information. Choose your backup method.
You will only see updates that are compatible with your current software version. If you have not downloaded the most current release, you will not see the option to download the latest release.
Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
Turn on iPadOS Updates below Automatically Install and Automatically Download.
When an update is available, iPad downloads and installs the update overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi. You’re notified before an update is installed.
To turn off automatic updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates.
Update iPad manually
To check for and download software updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update.
The screen shows the currently installed version of iPadOS and whether an update is available.
You might be unable to update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly, or over the air, for one of these reasons: Your device doesn't support the latest software. There isn't enough available storage space on your device. The update takes a long time to download.
Firstly, make sure you're on Wi-Fi rather than a cellular connection. Another simple fix is simply rebooting your iPhone (hold the side button plus either the volume up or down button simultaneously). But the most common issue preventing iOS 17 from downloading and installing is a lack of available storage space.
iPadOS 17 is compatible with sixth-generation iPad models, fifth-generation iPad mini, third-generation iPad Air, and second-generation iPad Pro 12.9-inch models or later.
Open your iPhone and go to Settings > General > Software Update.Wait a few seconds (or minutes) for the update to appear and then hit Install Now for iOS 17 (or Install Tonight if you want to install iOS 17 later). When iOS 17 becomes available to you, it will show up in your iPhone settings.
Locate your iPad on your computer. When you see the option to Restore or Update, choose Update. Your computer will try to reinstall the software without erasing your data. Wait while your computer downloads the software for your iPad.
With each update, Apple releases a full list of devices that are able to download it. If you don't see your model on the list and it's more than 5-6 years old, it's likely that your iPad is too old to handle a new update. Your iPad can't download new apps or update the ones you have.
Either way, once you see Install Now or Download and Install, tap that and follow the instructions from there. (You'll also get a choice to Download Tonight in case you need your phone and would prefer it to update while you're asleep.)
