As the world’s leading manufacturer, China has long been a go-to for major companies looking to produce their goods. Other countries have started to catch up in terms of manufacturing capabilities and are becoming more attractive options. Especially since during the pandemic, production was brought to a standstill and practically kneecapped the supply chain and the world economy. This had businesses immediately looking for alternatives to make their supply chains more resilient.
Watching this trend unfold, other countries began offering incentives and actively courting production. At the head of the race are India and Vietnam. They’ve both been making strides in the manufacturing sector, so much so that tech giant Apple is considering them as potential replacements for its Chinese factories.
This move isn’t surprising when you consider some of the advantages these two countries offer compared to China. Labor costs are significantly lower in both India and Vietnam than they are in China, and they’re offering tax breaks and other government-supported incentives. Both countries also have strong infrastructure and supply chain systems, so goods can be produced more quickly and efficiently than before.
The increasing importance of India and Vietnam for global manufacturing is evidenced by the fact that many European companies are now looking to these two countries as viable alternatives to China. In particular, Danish toy company Lego recently announced plans to build its first carbon-neutral factory in Vietnam rather than China.
India and Vietnam are proving to be strong alternatives to Chinese manufacturing capabilities. With their competitive labor costs, well-developed infrastructure, and ever-improving production processes, these countries are increasingly attractive options for businesses around the world. As such, it looks like India and Vietnam are well on their way to replacing China as the go-to for global manufacturers.
