Following the success of theInternational Property Rights Index, theProperty Rights Allianceintroduced the International Trade Barrier Index (TBI) in 2019. A foundational inspiration of the TBI reflects theagreement among most economiststhat free trade tends to yieldnet benefits for the human condition. It is also noteworthy that openness to trading with ones’ neighbors ispositively correlated to civic freedom and greater accountabilityfor political governance.
Just 2.6% of the world's population lives in the freest markets, but they contribute 11% of global GDP! An increasing 20% of the world's population resides in the most protected markets, yet they contribute only 5% of global GDP!!
