To rank the most affordable cities to live in 2023, the Guides Team compared 223 of the largest U.S. cities across seven metrics. These seven metrics are explained below, along with their sources:

  • Median home sale price: Data from Zillow is updated as of March 2023.
  • Median monthly rent: Data comes from Zillow and is as of March 2023.

Combined groceries, transportation, and miscellaneous goods and services make up 58% of average household expenses, according to Council for Community and Economic Research data. Housing, which we looked at separately via the median home sale price and median monthly rent, makes up about 28% of average household expenses.

We calculated an average ranking using the seven metrics above and weighting them all equally. The most affordable city scored 100, while the least received a 0.
