Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original action-packed adventure “Strange World” introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures. The voice cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; Dennis Quaid as Searcher’s larger-than-life explorer father, Jaeger; Jaboukie Young-White as Searcher’s 16-year-old son, Ethan, who longs for adventure; Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher’s partner in all things; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, Avalonia’s fearless leader who spearheads the exploration into the strange world.
Fresh score. And while Strange World is quite entertaining and groundbreaking in terms of representation, we have to admit that it's not the best movie of its genre and ends up feeling formulaic both in terms of storytelling and character development.
Yes the characters aren't as well developed as they could have been, the story is just a rehash of everything that's been done before, the ideas don't really go anywhere, and certain situations just conveniently resolve themselves without much effort.
In addition to the violent scenes and scary visual images mentioned above, Strange World has some scenes that could scare or disturb children aged 5-8 years.
Hollywood Reporter: 'Strange World' character's sexuality is a fact of life. "A particularly tender sequence in which Searcher meets Ethan's crush, Diazo (Jonathan Melo), sets up, with little fanfare, a historic moment for the conservative studio: Ethan is the first out gay teenager in a Disney animated film.
Despite knowing a movie with a central character having strong romantic feelings for someone of the same sex wouldn't be accepted in certain countries, and would thus be banned, loosing them money… Disney decided keep the scenes in the movie!
But also, this movie is a fun and exciting adventure that tackles issues responsible of energy production and use, appropriate technology, community diversity, decentering humans, and harmony with nature. In short, despite being made by Disney, Strange World filled to the brim with both solarpunk aesthetics and values.
Strange Days is not a simple film, but a profound sensory experience, where the filmmaker is the prophet of a reality just around the corner. Fresh score. Kathryn Bigelow's propulsive sci-fi thriller Strange Days is a stone cold, ass-kicking classic. Fresh score.
