He snapped at a man who took out a notebook, telling him to put it away, he could take notes later.
Kiss cost a contract Mr. King sometimes had black men kiss white women to "catalyze" emotional responses. The Navy canceled a $27,000 contract with Mr. King in 1973 after he kissed his white assistant, Toni Hunter, during a seminar at Charleston Naval 1 Base. Mr.
King took part in the 1963 March on Washington; was arrested during civil rights protests in Nashville in 1963; took part in 1 the 1965 Selma march; and was a staff member of the 1967 National Advisory Committee on Civil Disorders, or Kerner Commission. He wrote a 1983 book, "Fire In My Bones," tracing his life and civil rights efforts. "Black power is a song, a rhythmic song, contagious and black, with a message that whites can never understand," he wrote. One of nine children He was born June 25, 1925, in Pottsville, one of nine children of Richard Rembert, who called himself Charles H. King, and Esther Dickerson King.
The father changed his name to escape the law after he killed a man in Louisiana around 1905. The younger King was in the Navy, Air Force and Army, and a student at Virginia Union College, between 1943 and 1953. He entered the ministry and was pastor of Liberty Baptist Church in Evansville, from 1956 to 1966. In 1967, Mr. King was executive director of the Civil Rights Commission of Gary, and, while on leave of absence, an analyst for the Kerner Commission.
Named for its chairman, Gov. Otto Kerner of Illinois, it investigated the causes of racial disorders that swept U.S. cities in 1967. Mr. King was elated with the findings.
"The United States is headed toward two communities, one white, one black, separate but unequal," the commission said in its 1968 report, which sold more than 2 million copies. It blamed whites' racism for the suffering of blacks. Taught at theology school In 1968, Mr. King got a job teaching half-time in the School of Theology at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, and also on a half-time basis, conducting a race relations program in Lutheran churches in Ohio. He named his program the "Urban Crisis Center." The Lutheran Synod of Ohio did not renew his contract, and in 1970, he incorporated in Dayton.
David E. Easterly, a Dayton Newspapers official (and now president of the Cox Newspapers Division in Atlanta) helped Mr. King get started in Dayton with news coverage of his seminars there. After meeting Atlanta's Maynard Jackson, who attended one of the seminars, Mr. King moved here in 1974.
The University of Evansville, awarded Mr. King an honorary doctorate of divinity in 1983. He also received a Resurgens Atlanta's Race Relations Award; the Louis Brownlow Award of the American League of Cities; and an Urban League distinguished service award. Surviving are his wife, Annese King of Atlanta; a son, Karl King of Los Angeles; a brother, Alfred King of Columbia, and four sisters, Diane King and Phoebe Brown of Harrisburg, Elsie King of Steeltown, and Margaret Anderson of MidPa.
