What is the average size of a JPEG file?
The JPEG's lossy compression translates into files that are relatively small, with an average size of around 10MB.
As a rough guide a 20KB image is a low quality image, a 2MB image is a high quality one.
Typically images will be supplied as JPEGs, and an A4 (210mm x 297mm or 8¼” x 11¾”) image at 72 ppi will create a JPEG of approximately 500kb or half a megabyte. Remember though – to use that image in print we need the image to be 300 ppi, and at that resolution the JPEG will be around 3.5 Megabytes.
An image is generally considered high resolution if it has 300 PPI or more, with typical dimensions ranging from 2,000 x 2,000 pixels for smaller images to 5,000 x 5,000 pixels (or more) for larger ones. Keep in mind that the specific pixel requirements will likely depend on the intended use of the image.
By intelligently discarding all the colors that the human eye can't pick out — called lossy compression — JPEGs keep their file size as small as possible. Compared to lossless formats like GIFs, JPEGs are dramatically smaller in size.
A larger JPG file is better image quality, and smaller is less image quality. You have to decide what is good enough, but JPG is never "too big", since image quality decreases with JPG compression. 24 bit color has three bytes per pixel uncompressed. So the decision is if you want it small or if you want it good.

This is perhaps the most common photo size in print. This size of photo fits perfectly into a 3:2 aspect ratio.
The medium size JPEG file is 2400×3600 pixels when it is at the 8″x12″ proportion. This means there are 300 pixels per inch, and that is a photo quality print at 8″x12″ size. Large size is for printing a poster or anything larger than 8×12.
How can I check if my photo is hi-res? On your computer, right-click on the image and then select “Properties.” A window will appear with the image's details. Go to the “Details” tab to see the image's dimensions and resolution. Resolution should be at least 300 PPI or 300 DPI to be considered hi-res.
We find that the average file size has grown more than ten-fold since the mid-2000s, though most files are still under 8 MB, and that there are demographic and technological influences in the size distributions.
How do I resize a JPEG without losing quality?
Use image editing software
Image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, or Pixlr can be used to resize images without losing quality. These programs allow you to adjust the image's size while maintaining its original quality.

You can right-click on the image file and choose "get info" from the dropdown menu. Alternatively, you can also find the file size and dimension info in column or gallery view (at the top of the file window) when viewing files.

If you are exporting photos for web or screen display, you will need around 75ppi (pixels per inch), for home printers 140 – 200 ppi, and the best quality prints will require 300 ppi.
Adjust the Size: Any adjustments to your JPEG can be found under the Tools section of the menu bar. Choose “Adjust Size” to open a new dialog box called Image Dimensions. This allows you to change the width/height, resolution, and other measurements.
JPEG compression is inherently "lossy". This means some image information is discarded in order to save on storage space. PixelSugar, like most image editors, lets you choose an image "quality" setting for JPEGs, which controls the tradeoff between file size and visual quality.
The compression options in Microsoft Picture Manager reduce both file size and picture dimensions based on how you intend to use the picture, such as in Web pages or e-mail messages. Select the picture you want to compress. Click the Picture Tools Format tab, and then click Compress Pictures.
What is a good JPG quality?
The amount of JPEG compression is typically measured as a percentage of the quality level. An image at 100% quality has (almost) no loss, and 1% quality is a very low quality image. In general, quality levels of 90% or higher are considered "high quality", 80%-90% is "medium quality", and 70%-80% is low quality.
As a general benchmark: 90% JPEG quality gives a very high-quality image while gaining a significant reduction on the original 100% file size.

JPG vs JPEG: Is There a Difference? There is no difference between the JPG and JPEG formats except for the number of characters. The term JPG only exists because earlier versions of Windows operating systems (MS-DOS 8.3 and FAT-16) had a maximum 3-letter limit when it came to file names.
