$325M Neurontin Class Action Settlement Reached with Third-Party Payors (2)The manufacturers of the drug Neurontin reached a $325 million class action lawsuit settlement Wednesday over allegations they fraudulently marketed the prescription drug, which is used to treat seizures, restless leg syndrome, and pain caused by shingles. If approved, third-party payers of the drug will be eligible to claim a cash award from the Neurontin class action settlement, announced Friday.

The Neurontin settlement marks the end to a nearly 10-year-old class action lawsuit battle in which plaintiffs, who included both direct purchasers and third-party payers, accused Pfizer of delaying generic versions of Neurontin and promoted the drug for unapproved uses. Pfizer reached a $190 million Neurontin class action settlement with direct purchasers of the drug (consumers) in April.

The plaintiffs in the Neurontin class action lawsuit alleged that Pfizer delayed competition from generic producers of the drug, gabapentin anhydrous, which Pfizer sold under the name Neurotin, by exercising a monopoly over the medicine. The plaintiffs alleged that Pfizer’s actions included illegal off-label promotion, manipulating the patent application process, filing bogus patent lawsuits, and engaging in fraud, which the plaintiffs claim amounted to violations of the Sherman Act.

Additionally, the plaintiffs claimed they had to overpay for Neurontin. In 2004, following an investigation by the U.S. Justice Department, Pfizer pleaded guilty to criminal illegal marketing charges involving Neurontin and was hit with a $430 million fine, sparking the Neurotin class action lawsuit.

The third-party payor plaintiffs included insurance companies, health care benefit providers, union health and welfare plans, and others. The third-party plaintiffs filed a motion for preliminary approval of the Neurontin settlement, which will provide cash awards to third-party payors in the United States who purchased, paid for, administered and/or reimbursed for Neurontin sold by the Defendants or gabapentin sold by Greenstone LLC.

The Neurontin class action settlement reached in April will apply to consumers in the United States that purchased Neurontin from Pfizer at any time during the period of December 11, 2002 through August 31, 2008, and who have purchased generic gabapentin.

Details on how to file a claim for both the consumer Neurontin class action settlement and the third-party payor settlement were not immediately available, but the settlement website for the third-party payors will be www.NeurontinSettlement.com, according to court documents. The site was not live at press time.

In 2020 was put on 900mg 3x a day for nearly 4 years. My doctor told me to take as much as I wanted to feel better, and he kept bottles and bottles coming me way! I complained to my doctor that I needed a lower dose, that something is seriously wrong, and he told me to take more, I would feel better. I had so many side effects such as extreme anxiety, social anxiety, stress, headaches, dizziness, clumsy and dropping things, balance is off and running into walls, leg aches, insomnia, hair loss, weight gain, blurred vision, dental decay, fear that someone is going to hurt me or I will hurt them, fear of dying, withdrawn, scared to drive, memory loss, brain fog, jolting in eyes, hands shake, finger pain, arm pain, neck pain, burning in the back, tremors in hands, hand writing has deteriorated, words don’t come out right, confusion, depression, severe fatigue, very tired and sleepy, drowsy, etc. Take all of the side effects … X 3 on the intensity scale, there is no other way to describe it. It got so bad that I was scared to drive my car and at times, I could not leave my house! I was on a constant emotional roller coaster and felt like my life had spiraled out of control. I am certain I have left out a quite a few things, but this is what I can remember. Every symptom or underlying condition that GABAPENTIN is prescribed for, it duplicates those symptoms but intensifies them or makes the pain of the symptoms more extreme. GABAPENTIN is given for so many different issues, it’s crazy! Now I am off the medication and trying to get my memory and life back.

Prescribed 900mg/day for nerve pain. I developed severe anxiety, depression, blurred vision and eye pain/jolting, dental decay, and I could go on and on. This medication nearly cost me my life. It should not be given to a human or an animal.

I was proscribed Gabapentin around 3 years ago. I started having savvier weight gain, blurry vision, memory loss. I have been going to a doctor for the last year trying to figure out what was going on, My primary doctor was the one who mentioned that my memory loss could be cased from some of my medications! both my pain doctor and the doctor that is looking into my memory loss had nothing to do with that, so I started to cut back against my doctor’s advice, and I have lost a 125 pounds my memory has good and bad days I don’t know what kind of permeant damage I have.
