JB Cripps (2024)

JB Cripps is a major character featured in Red Dead Online.

History[]

Background[]

JB Cripps states to have been breaking down animal carcasses for a living since a young age, as well as having worked in tanning hides in Wisconsin at some point during the 1860s. He mentions having trained as to become an acrobat for a short period of time in Portugal and also claims to have been imprisoned in the Sultanate of Sulu after having stowed away on a ship. He had also been imprisoned at Sisika Penitentiary.

JB Cripps partook in a robbery in Tennessee at some stage, alongside two accomplices known as Limpy Pete and Phil the Crab. The trio found themselves locked in the vault during their attempted heist, forcing them to wait until the bank reopened, during which the stench of their "weekend of nature calling" made the bank clerk who opened the vault faint. While JB Cripps escaped, the other two were subsequently caught shortly after and hanged the following day.

Prior to 1892, he befriended Maggie Fike. Following the eventual disruption of her moonshining operations, he believed her to have been killed during the raid by Reid Hixon.

Other comments directly from him imply he had also been a soldier. At some point prior to 1898, he became an associate of Horley and the widowed Jessica LeClerk.

A Land of Opportunities[]

Shortly after their escape from custody, Horley introduces the protagonist to Cripps, who sets up their camp. Cripps then moves into the protagonist's camp and begins working for them in exchange for a small daily fee. He is in charge of managing and organizing the camp.

Frontier Pursuits[]

Cripps later sends the protagonist a letter, asking them to meet him in the nearest town. There, he is seen buying provisions from a general store and explains his intentions to start his own trading company with the protagonist's help. However, the protagonist must first buy the butcher’s table, which unlocks the Trader Role and steal a wagon. Upon doing so, they can deliver animal materials to Cripps at the camp, who will transform them into products, which are then delivered to buyers and sold for profit by the protagonist.

A Life of 'Shine[]

At some point during the protagonist's trader career, Cripps introduces them to his old friend Maggie Fike, who will propose a partnership in starting an illegal distillery operation.

Personality[]

Cripps appears to be a hard-working man who has acquired experience in quite a few different areas in his past. At camp, he can be seen working almost all the time. On rare occasions, Cripps will play his harmonica or just rest on his stool. As a loyal camp companion, Cripps will also defend the protagonist, himself, and the camp if he spots enemies approaching. He always seems to be friendly towards the protagonist, saying goodbye when they leave the camp and welcoming them back upon return. He will also occasionally tell the protagonist stories about his own life adventures.

Appearance[]

Cripps is an elderly, bald-headed man, likely in his late 60s or early 70s. He has blue eyes and a grey beard. By default, he wears his ordinary outfit named "Standard 1", which consists of a light brown duster coat, a dark brown shirt, a dirty blue neckerchief, brown trousers, black boots, a black weapon belt, dark brown gloves as well as a brown hat.

Cripps' outfit can also be changed by the protagonist by using Wilderness Outfitters and buying one of 21 other available outfits.

• If downed by an attack on the protagonist's camp, Cripps can be revived for a fee of $4.00.
• Cripps is a rather deadly shot with his Carbine Repeater. Hostile players will typically be downed or killed in 2-4 hits without the use of items that fortify the Health Bar and/or Core.
• He will often make idle comments alluding to his past as well as in reference to the Frontier Pursuits roles.
• Cripps appears to dislike dogs for some unknown reason, as he will make negative comments when a player interacts with an owned dog at camp.
