Will iPhone will get iOS 17?
Owners of newer iPhones, such as the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max, the iPhone 11, iPhone SE (second generation and up), iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 can download iOS 17, Apple's website shows. However, earlier model iPhones will not support the system update.
As security researcher Josh Long puts it, if your iPhone can run iOS 17 and you care about security, you should upgrade. He points out that Apple has patched over 70 vulnerabilities between iOS 17 and iOS 17.1.
It was made publicly available on September 18, 2023 as a free software update for supported iOS devices (see the supported devices section). iOS 17 receives new security updates multiple times a month, and gets new feature updates every few months (and will continue to get feature updates until the release of iOS 18).
Apple's iOS 18 is expected to make its debut at WWDC 2024. Generative AI could be a huge part of iOS 18. iPhone 11 and newer models are expected to grab a spot in iOS 18 supported devices list.
The 'Display' Takes The Limelight
For starters, iPhone 17 series will get an all-encompasssing Dynamic Island on all four models. Of course, the one on Pro models will be tadbit smallers and you'll soon know why. The iPhone 17 series will be use LTPO panels with 120Hz ProMotiion technology on all four models.

Which iPhone models won't run the new iOS 17? With the release of iOS 17, there are three more iPhone models that won't run Apple's latest mobile operating system: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. Apple stopped providing feature upgrades for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 series with the release of iOS 16 last year.
iOS 17 requires a Xs, Xr, or newer. That doesn't change the fact Apple released this iPhone six years ago, and it's simply too old to handle the latest operating system. Check the bottom of the screen once you do Settings > General > Software Update.
Is iOS 17 safe for iPhone 13?
A former Apple sales specialist and self proclaimed Apple expert has warned that iPhone 13 users should not update their devices to iOS 17. He reports facing numerous challenges, including app crashes, poor performance in social media apps as well as connectivity issues.
Just because your iPhone supports iOS 17 doesn't necessarily mean the new OS will run smoothly on your device. An older iPhone model, like the iPhone XS or iPhone 11 Pro might struggle to keep up with iOS 17's demands, due to little storage, low RAM or an older chipset.
In terms of new features, only iOS 17 is currently supported by Apple. For those with iPhones that only run older versions of iOS though, Apple does still support iOS 16, and possibly iOS 15, with security updates.
With the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus in 2025, Apple is expected to also bring the larger 6.27- and 6.86-inch display sizes to its two standard iPhone models. As a result, expect the entire iPhone 17 lineup to use a taller aspect ratio of 19.6:9, suggesting the devices will be slightly taller, rather than wider.
Moreover, FaceTime will also now give users the ability to leave video messages if someone doesn't pick up a video call. With iOS17, Facetime calls will also get more expressive – with reactions such as hearts, balloons, fireworks and more effects that can be activated through simple gestures.
According to iOS 17 review, many users complain battery drain after iOS 17 update. If you've recently updated to the iOS 17 version, you may have noticed a significant decrease in battery life.

The first Public Beta was released on July 12, and corresponds with the same build as Developer Beta 3. The final release is on September 18. Update 09/12/23: The release candidate of iOS 17 is now available to beta testers.
Instead of allowing users to sideload apps, the company's plan is that the feature will be limited to Mobile Device Management (MDM). In other words, this won't be a feature users can enable or disable. Rather, Managed App Distribution will allow managers of company mobile devices to push apps to phones.
There's a lot to like about its new customization and Standby features, but it's the numerous smaller refinements that truly make iOS 17 a top-tier mobile operating system—and it will only get better as new features are released next year. As such, it's well worthy of our Editors' Choice award.

While iOS 16 introduced new flashy features like a customisable lock screen, iOS 17 boasts a number of quality-of-life updates like improved autocorrect tech, improved widget support, voice message transcription and even the ability to leave video messages when your FaceTime buddy doesn't answer the phone.
It's a similar story with the original iPhone SE. When Apple introduces iOS 18 later in 2024 we expect that support for iOS 15 will end, and with it support for anything older than the iPhone 8 (which launched in September 2017).
