Buell is a minor character featured in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online.

Buell is a Dutch Warmblood horse owned by Hamish Sinclair.

Events of Red Dead Online[]

Buell can be found in the pen at Veteran's Homestead and beside Hamish at his camp in Cotorra Springs. He cannot be interacted with.

Events of Red Dead Redemption 2[]

Buell is first encountered in the "The Veteran Part I". Hamish Sinclair informs the player that his horse, Buell, had bucked him off and that his wooden leg became tangled in the stirrup, leaving him unable to walk. The player retrieves Buell from nearby and leads him back to Hamish, who is thankful. He rides away, and tells the player to come and see him sometime.

In "The Veteran Part IV", Hamish is mortally wounded by a giant boar on a hunting trip with the protagonist. His dying wish to the protagonist is to take care of Buell, before taking his final breath. The player can choose to mount Buell and keep him for themselves, leave him behind, or sell him at a horse fence or stable.

Afterwards, Buell can become a permanent horse for the player.

Trivia[]

• It is likely that Buell was named after real-life 1861-1865 Civil War commander Don Carlos Buell. During the cutscene before "The Veteran Part III", Hamish mentions a battle where the bodies were so thick that "you could've walked across the whole field without your boots touching the ground." This was a detail noted by Union General Ulysses S. Grant in the aftermath of the Battle of Shiloh, during which Don Carlos Buell was a commander.
• After Hamish Sinclair's death, if the player mounts Buell, the player will earn honor for carrying out Hamish's dying wish whereas if the player sells Buell at a stable or the horse fence, they will lose honor.
• Buell was depicted as being a Standard Horse in the Official Gameplay Reveal trailer.^[1]
• Buell's name can't be changed in the services option of the horse stables.
• If the player happens to get bucked off their horse during one of Hamish Sinclair's side-missions, Hamish will jokingly say that this happens frequently with him and Buell too.
• If the player wishes to keep Buell after the story, they must complete the last part of Hamish's mission after Chapter 6, as John. If the player completes the mission as Arthur, Buell will be lost along with all the other horses owned by Arthur after the mission “Red Dead Redemption”.
• There is a similar horse called the Kladruber available for purchase in Red Dead Online upon reaching rank 10 in the Trader role, but its coat is simply called "Cremello."
• If possible, it is recommended for the player to use Buell when hunting dangerous game as he is notably much braver than other horses, and has much less chance of bucking the player off when encountering predators.
• When obtained, Buell is overweight, implying Hamish overfed him.
• Buell can be spawned using the cheat code "You want something new". He will first appear as a normal Dutch Warmblood; however, he will be renamed "Buell" as soon as he is stabled and cannot be renamed.
• Buell can be obtained early by ramming into him on horseback while he is hitched outside the Veteran's Homestead. When struck, Buell will spook and detach from the hitching post, subsequently running over the mountains to Roanoke Ridge. The player may track Buell on horseback, and after a certain amount of time will be able to jump to Buell when close enough. From here, the player must hitch Buell at camp, save the game, then reload the save. Buell will be hitched in camp and appear similar to the above.
• In his appearances in Red Dead Online, due to a developer oversight, Buell will sometimes spawn as a mare.
